I have a friend going through a hard time at home and in her love life, and it isn't the people she eats lunch with, or her soccer team, or her fellow performing arts junkies who are helping her, and supporting her, it's me. And, honestly, I don't know her half as much as I would like, I mean she is about as close to perfect as any guy could find, she's intelligent, outgoing, honest, modest, dresses well, has a dry sense of humor that appeals to my British background, and yet I talk to her maybe 20 minutes a day as she and I walk to our respective classes during passing periods. And I ask myself why all these other people haven't stepped in and supported her as well, and it's because that they think they're friends, whilst not knowing the meaning of the word.
They think that a friend is merely a good acquaintance. Someone whose company you enjoy, and who you find mildly interesting. But, and this is their problem, that isn't the case. A friend is someone who, should need arise, and the act be practicable, you would welcome into your family with open arms and open heart. friend is someone who you hold, in perspective and in terms of relationship, just short of a lover. This is a friend.
